Green sodalite exhibits dramatically strong tenebrescense - but most people don’t see the initial color of the mineral when it is broken from the matrix. Almost all of the rocks within the Illimaussaq complex show a strange coloration when initially broken (first exposed to daylight). This color is always darker than the piece normally is (on exposure to light). Once the color fades on most of the minerals, it cannot be brought back by UV exposure.

The green sodalite does respond strongly to UV light and is highly tenebrescent. But in the following animation note that the tenebrescense caused by UV light is not the same return to the initial color pattern when the mineral is first broken. The complete piece darkens to a deep purple, where only certain areas were purple when the mineral was first broken from the matrix.

Yellow sodalite from the Taseq Slope is one of the more tenebrescent varieties of sodalite from the complex. It darkens to a deep grape purple after exposure to SW UV and the resulting color change is striking on the white matrix. Much of this sodalite can be considered to be quite gemmy.

A blue variety of sodalite is found on the southern shore of the Tunuliarfik Fjord. Normally blue sodalite from other parts of the world is not fluorescent but this material is quite fluorescent. Additionally it is also quite tenebrescent. Most specimens are found in a layered habit, and occasionally as shown in these pictures - a massive gemmy habit.

Pea-Green sodalite is usually not tenebrescent. Occasional pieces may exhibit a slight color change, but for the most part it is not affected by SW UV. Thus, specimens appear very bright under SW and usually glaring under LW, This variety is most likely the brightest variety of sodalite from the complex (and probably the world).
